Oh so very nice to have good news come by as your defrosting your fingers and toes. News to keep us going creatively, make it all seem worthwhile, warm and inspired!

And Hill End artists having a great July, with three of our artists being accepted into the Archibald and Wynne, we're all fired up here.
You can view the artists on http://www.hillendartscouncil.blogspot.com.au

You all know Bill's great love of antiquarian photographic processes and how he just keeps chipping away, tweaking, polishing old methods to bring them up to contemporary times.

Arts & Science that sums up Bill.

Well today we had an email to say!

Bill has been accepted into the Fremantle Arts Centre Print Award in Perth Western Australia.
To be held on the 23rd September - 12th November 2016. A premier print award that showcases fine art prints and artists books, it presents the best works from established and emerging artists across Australia.

Cool Burn Laura - Photogravure Copperplate

Bill's evocative entry Cool Burn Laura is a photogravure of the landscape of Cape York, Queensland which we experienced through an artist camp organized and created by The CORRIDOR project. The cool burns on country is all about the Aboriginals managing and maintaining their vast landscape by the ancient method of fire. Bill developed and printed the image here at our studio at Hill End.

As Bill says
As William Wright explained in 2014 “John (Beard) is a painter ... who you need to find, you need to discover. I have been watching over the years you get this sense of looking ... over time, you see it takes on another dimension. John is an artist like that.”
Kon Gouriotus, Profile magazine February 2016

A response from Barry Pearce, former Head Of Australian Art AGNSW

John's vision of The Raft of the Medusa allows one to inhabit the horrifying, almost uninhabitable Romantic grandeur of the great masterpiece and comprehend its powerful beauty better. No mean feat.

Detail (approximate size 40x52cm) from After the Raft of the Medusa (size of complete work 500x700cm)

I recalled the Kenneth Clark passage regarding Velasquez when standing in front of your panels based on The Raft of the Medusa; thinking about Manet looking at Velasquez and how his revelation of the Spanish master's texture, yet reining in the energy of execution with hard borders had such a quintessential influence of the modern movement in France ( a bit like Delacroix's response to Constable I suppose).

I think in your own way you too are looking to unravel the mystery of these great masterpieces but you secure the vision through a delicate system of tessellated marks, a process of engagement in your own language which is totally legitimate. Further, you seem to transmute an overpowering Romantic statement into something intimate. Quite miraculous really, like climbing inside and being caressed and absorbed by Gericault's neurones. Kenneth clark regarding Velasquez....

Kenneth Clark......One should be content to accept it without question, but one cannot look for long at Las Meninas without wanting to find out how it is done. I remember that when it hung in Geneva in 1939 I used to go very early in there morning, before the gallery was open, and try to stalk it, as if it were really alive. (This is impossible in the Prado, where the hushed and darkened room in which it hangs is never empty.) I would start from as far away as I could, when the illusion was complete, and come gradually nearer, until suddenly what had been a hand, and a ribbon, and a piece of silver, dissolved into a salad of beautiful brush strokes. I thought I might learn something if I could catch the moment at which this transformation took place, but it proved to be as elusive as the moment between waking and sleeping.

Kenneth Clark

Looking at pictures

London, John Murray 1960 pp 36-37 and sleeping
OPEN HOUSE AND STUDIO DAY HILL END

HILL END PRESS will be opening their doors for this very special event.

As the blossom buds are bursting and colours start to appear it is time to once again head to Hill End's Open Day on Sunday 25th October 2015. A number of the villagers are throwing open their homes, their gardens, their Royal Hall, Court House, churches and studios to allow you to peek inside and see how they now live, work and play in an historic town.

Most of the buildings open for viewing were constructed in the 1870's and have seen generations of families through their doors. Some were almost in ruins when they were lovingly "adopted" by people with a passion and on Open Day they wish to share this with you. Many years of painstaking restoration and preservation (and never mind the dollars!) have gone into conserving these buildings as useful and comfortable dwellings. They are not museums, they are everyday buildings, still being used for their intended purposes and now all the more treasured for being so. Some have the "mod cons" but these are skilfully integrated into an eclectic environment where they seem right at home."Why didn't I think of that?" will be a constant comment.

Our court is now in session....2015 has heralded the inclusion of a new venue, rarely seen before by visitors to our town unless the long arm of the law was after you! The Hill End Court House has seen disputed mining claims, charges of "furious riding", matters relating to unlicensed dogs and the odd murder. These have all been dealt with here over the years. It will be open to hear your case, then head to St Paul's Church where you may repent..

The gardens promise to be in full bloom so bring your camera as Hill End in spring is a delight to behold. Artists, Donald Friend, Russell Drysdale and Margaret Olley found inspiration here and so will you. The unique light is still the same but the facilities are now so much better. Visit the artists who are now here and who have given up city life for a brief tree change to absorb the atmosphere.

A cottage with a bathroom "out the back" means that it is a place to escape to and relax in a lingering tub. Leave the mobile phone on the dining room table; it probably won't work out there anyway! View the family portraits in the Royal Hall and watch out as their eyes follow you around the room..

This is your opportunity to speak to these people, who are proud of their village, in a relaxed friendly atmosphere and ask them the questions that have surely arisen as you wander around the town. Volunteers will be available at all venues to guide you to your next place of exploration. C'mon in!

Bookings to experience this great day out on Sunday 25th October are essential and can be made by phoning 02 6337 8306 or email lapaloma@skymesh.com.au

Registration and payment is at the Royal Hall in Beyers Avenue (sorry no cash on the day) Cost: $25.00 per person/concession $18.00

Further information go to www.hillendartscouncil.blogspot.com.au
Hill End delivers.....what's that mean you say?

Well often, more than often one can wake up and think it's a regular day and out of the blue you are presented with a beautiful gift of a very interesting person.

They just seem to pop up out of nowhere!

Often this person has come a long way, which is not hard to do seeing we are a bit isolated, but this very special encounter was from Sweden.

Swedish artist Mikael Kihlman came for morning tea, twice to our delight. Hill End artist Danelle Bergstrom met Mikael during her time as ‘artist-in-residence’ at Konstepidemin Gothenburg, between July 2011 and July 2012, when she travelled to Stockholm to meet with her good friend, Adam Rish, for the opening of his joint exhibition with another friend of Danelles, Australian artist, Garry Shead, at The Graphic House.

A friendship was born, a cross pollination of artistic ideas and we were fortunate enough that Mikael had come out for his exhibition at Gallery SPOT81 in Chippendale Sydney.
history and traces of human life, such as cities, villages and historical

an event stretched out in time. The key is the light that uncovers the darkness
and gives a reflective and contemplative mode to the experience. The technique
drypoint, an old copper graphical method suits the way I work very well and
gives itself a patina and a feeling that adds a lot to the finished work. I'm
basically a black and white graphic artist, one of many in a strong European
tradition. That's my main reference point and a base for my work.

THANK
GOODNESS I say, we're through another winter, not that I want to wish time
away but the frost, or those drafty vicious, drafty drafts, or the masking
tape on the door jams and keyholes, hotwater bottle between my legs (you may well ask!) and everything in between the too thin doorsnakes (that I promise myself every year I'm going to change)
but recently I've noticed there's a slight vigor in me and more than likely a slight vigor in
the locals and kangaroos.

I sometimes wish I was one that loved winter.

It's like every year a similar request, it's shut down in winter and friends decline in coming, saying other things are on that weekend, no it's too cold, but you'll be fine, just rug up, add a 3rd beanie!

I
try every year to look upon it's beauty, rather than the anxiety of it, my body in permanent limbo, imagining the poet Keats
blissfully looking out his window marveling at a red robin in the white
landscape, he always said colour was at it's best in winter.

Which makes perfectly good
sense, but one has to have that mindset, that the desires of winter
chills are sublime.

New mindset.

My own winter mindset is of tin eyelids.

I
try it every year, it's a serious mental uphill mindset to look upon this distinct change in the seasons as a gift, a gem
really, something to be treasured. Maybe with our future climate I'll be hankering for a really cold winter, for more icing over, maybe the future will bring water lapping at my feet and lakes instead of paddocks will be the order of the day, and the sun will be too hot to go out into, while preparing for cyclonic conditions.

I must be grateful I say to myself, all this wishing away is no good for the soul and besides it gives me the opportunity to have the best beanie collection.

But
here we are again, dreaming of Yayoi Kusama's dahlias and blossoms on the fruit trees.

A side step here....There's the most curious bird in the block next door, sits up high and breathes like a blow over a beer bottle, it's on its own and starts in the morning, has a break at lunch and then starts at twilight again. Curious thing and we can't work out what it is, some sort of pigeon we think.

Casting chook poo is such an exciting thought for me at the moment, simple pleasures
incubating in the forefront of my mind, what to plant is getting a jig a long and I'm madly in love with the wild gardens of Miranda Brooks and Arne Maynard for gardening inspire.

but guess what?

Our little red robin this winter was we went as invited artists with The Corridor Project which is
run by Pheobe Cowdery and Dylan Gower on a very cool road trip to Cape York for the "COOL BURN" yes we went in the middle of winter, bliss, camping with crocs and beyond.

'COOL BURN" is an environmentally responsive dialogue base on traditional fire management in NSW and Cape York, involving both indigenous and non indigenous artists, from the Central West in regional NSW and the Mapoon community in Cape York. Our trip was supported by the Kanangra Boyd to Wyangala Link Corridor Grant.
We've been work shopping our little hearts out and meeting some gorgeous people that I'm happy to say have become friends on the way, we've taught tin type and photogravure to artist in residence Angela Coombs and a second visit from Rochelle Staples for the tin type workshop and bringing along with her, her own 8 x 10 camera.

They are absolute honies/honey's these two and always invigorating in our studio to get such enthusiasm for antiquarian photography. They're both hooked.
Then we were on the road!

We visited Bathurst Regional Art Gallery to do a demo on Tin Type photography with their current exhibition on the Holtermann Collection, from the NSW State Library. All images that documented the Gold Rush era on show.

We used our little portable hydroponic tent, the one dope growers love and we had descendants of the Holtermann family come, what a hoot and took a tin type portrait of the one the family members. Just like Holtermann would have done in the 1870's. Then that afternoon off to Sydney contemporary for a demo on letterpress printmaking which turned out to be a really happy vibe going on there.

Then on to Canberra for teaching Tin Type photography at Photo Access, all eager antiquarian beavers and all came up with some really great results. They learned portraiture and landscape in tin type format, mixing the chemicals and how to varnish a plate with lavender oil!

We had 2 cameras from around 1910 plus we managed to get a nice small tintype out of an old box brownie. As a first for Bill, he used the studio flash set up to do some tintype portraits, and it worked really well. Usually it's a 15 second hold for the sitter with not blinking or moving an eyelid.

Another first, was running out of developer and making our own up out of iron supplement tablets from the chemist! Worked even better than the proper stuff, we think it was the sugar coating that made the difference!
Photo Access at Manuka is a great asset to the arts community in Canberra. Great people, curator Claire and technical assistant Robert made us feel very welcome and their knowledge was far and wide in photography, highly recommend for any keen photographer in Canberra to check it out.
One very proud mama, my daughter Parris Dewhurst had her very beautiful installation exhibition Feral State of Mind at NANA contemporary Newcastle, still on till this Saturday so if you are in that neck of the woods check it out. Exhibition in the old David Jones windows.

NANA'S current exhibition: Feral State Of Mind by Parris Dewhurst looks
best by nightfall when the reflections of the sun cease and the interior
gallery lights cast shadows over her skeletons and sculptures.
Radiating with mystery, Dewhurst's works pull the gaze of the passer by
into the den of the gallery space. Throughout three windows Feral State
Of Mind depicts soft sculpture amidst an installation of nature: Trees,
branches, skeletons and more. The carefully articulated sculptures
maintain a reverence for the passing of life in the rawness of natural
materials and relics of skeletons, paired with minimal stitching,
cushions of fabric and props of wood. We witness an interference between
man and nature that is charming, alluring, pretty even, but with a
sinter undertone. The signs and symbols in this installation unite as a
system of warning, there is a suggestion to prepare and take care for
the future. It serves as a reminder that not all appearances run deep
and that in nature actions create consequences.

Feral State Of Mind closes on the 26th of September 2015

It was like taking a d e e p b r e a t h and here we go.

October and November have turned out to be the fullest months of this year, full and
blossoming with studio creativity.

We really didn't know how our workshops would pan out this year to be honest but we thought lets give it a go and see what happens. We questioned whether people would travel this far to experience our unique way of life and our studio school. We questioned what time of year would be best, what courses would we run.

Living in the country one has to be very diverse particularly as an artist to produce enough income to make it viable, rather than delusional. It helps if you have the ability to be able to change direction, a risk taker, be flexible and adapt very quickly or it helps enormously if you have a leaning to jump off from one direction and go the other way to give other options a go.

Which I'd rather do than be stuck and procrastinating.

The way it usual works between us is that one of us pushes the other gently into going forward, it's usual a balance of who's energy levels are highest at that point in time and who has the idea.

Sometimes we are both stubborn or determined to see it from one point of view ( artists tend to do this a lot) but somehow we arrive at the station to board the same train or one of us drags the other onto the train and sells a convincing pitch on the journey.

Because we are out here, isolated to some extent, working together 24/7, we work hard to come to the same equation even if it takes some extra chalk and a few hiccups.

Always chanting in my anxious mind
artist Martin Creeds slogan
E v e r y t h i n g i s g o i n g t o b e a l r i g h t .

So far The Studio School is building up to be an ongoing venture that we are both happy to keep pursuing. It brings along with it new friendships with us and between the students, stops us from going stark mad being in our own little creative part of the woods and the passing on of antiquarian processes that our students always find to be a full satisfaction and inspiration.

It's a winner one might say.

So October began with award winning artist Australian

J O A N N A L O G U E from King Street Gallery http://kingstreetgallery.com.au/artist/thumbnail/# . Joanna is a dream to work with, she has this calm confidence that just flows over you and has an extensive exhibition background and her work is held in many public and private collections. Her evocative landscape paintings are inspired by her home at Oberon.

Joanna and her partner Martin came over to Hill End for our Tin type workshop - wet plate collodian and we had a very productive 2 days together using the vintage 8 x 10 camera. So creative were the two days that Joanna came back to work with Bill in collaboration for the Natura Morta exhibition which we are all in at the Orange Regional Gallery on till 11th Janurary 2015. For a peek go to the online catalogue that Bill and I designed of all the artists in the exhibition. http://www.org.nsw.gov.au/current.html

Together they created two exceptional works on a grid system where the image was divided up and printed part by part on black aluminium prepared plates to form an overall image. One image
Y o r k e s d r e a m was made up of jugs and teacups looking beyond into Joanna's garden at Oberon, the other was a m o r t e kookaburra on a window sill in the little glasshouse.

32 plates later the effort was very much worth it. Bill and Joanna worked together very well with both being inspired by each others determination to get an excellent result and that they did. Boy oh boy it's one part science one part art and one part patience.

Time was the essence, I think it was about 5 weeks away from the opening and they had only just really started developing the plates. In this time they had to be made, assessed, positioned, remade and tweaked, sprayed and framed.

They were finished with spraying a robust two pack clear lacquer rather than the old way of lavender oil and gum sandarac that we usually do, which can be too soft for handling in a gallery situation. Which meant that Bill had to master almost a crash course on spraying like you would spray a new car.

The spraying had to work as there was no time left for a turnaround and all the plates are a unique state, one offs in other words, no going back this was it.

The scary daunting thing for me was that this had to be done in the studio, it was the only clean free zone but I was like fuck what about all the presses, stationery and our artwork, I had visions of a whole studio wrapped in misted two pack art installation. I found this very stressful.

Bill dampened down the studio floors with a mop and closed off all the doors and windows, wore spray painters overalls and a mask, having dust form on these plates as one is coating them is a tricky business. Even worrying about the dust coming off ones clothes is a problem.

But as usual when Bill puts his mind to something his off and very focused and in the zone of what is needed.

Just don't interrupt him, it will put him off and divert his confidence. Hence why we have an amazing garden, that's where I flee to on occasions like this.

Each night Bill would do a few plates in our studio, he had this exhaust system on a turntable that sucked all the excess varnishs away out the window it was something he bought on Ebay but it worked very well and then he would let them dry overnight. The night went on with us both working on the online catalogue for the exhibition and then back into it the next day. Whilst I waited patiently through the day in the wings to get on our Gordon Plate press to fill all the Christmas orders.

But you know what, Bill did it and very successfully, no residue anywhere, always our equation is me anxiously worrying and wanting to take them to the nearest panel beater and Bill amazing me with another skill his focused in on as he always believes in learning the skill himself even if it takes a bit more time.

The line up for the Natura Morta exhibition curated by Gavin Wilson was very successful, all the artists have very distinct individual styles and they all tied together to create a very strong exhibition.
Then in between all of this we were designing and making samples for our new letterpress stationery inspired by our wild garden. My safety net. After 6 months hard slog with everything else going on we developed a new range of letterpress stationery where I have drawn the designs, no, never ever any clip art is to be found in our studio it's got to come from the heart and creative mind. We're pretty tickled with the result and the garden to celebrate was just incredible this year, it's like it knew this stationery event was coming and showed off with no looking back. All can be seen websitewww.hillendpress.com.au

Open Studio Day came upon us on the October Long weekend where all the Hill End artists open up their studio doors, all can be seen on www.hillendartscouncil.blogspot.com.au

Next we had the vivacious J U L I E F O X A L L in the studio for a letterpress photopolymer workshop, she had this incredible enthusiasm for letterpress and it was a such fun working with her. Julie reacted like a kid in a toy shop and was very familiar with letterpress in the states and Canada as she had lived there for 8 years but hadn't investigated working with photopolymer plates and so over two days she confidently and industriously created a suite of her own 3 unique designs using the Gordon Platen press and die cutting them with a happy gingerly touch.

The lovely thing here is that we taught her and she taught us, that's the magic that comes out of our Studio School. Everyone gets a terrific result.

Coming on board next were 3 more inspiring artists coming for our two day course Learn to Letterpress workshop.

S AN D R A W I N K W O R T H , N O E L M C K E N N A and P A T RI C I A P H I L I P A D A M S.

Sandra just before coming to Hill End had an exhibition at Art est in Leichhardt which she was awarded for from a prize that she won with her entry in the Greenway project. In her exhibition she painted in water colour hundreds of items in her home, the imagination, effort and thoughtfulness were something to behold, it was joyful and also mindful of what surplus we create in our environment. You can see more of her work on her blogspot http://swinkworth.blogspot.com.au/

Patricia is an artist and a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the School of Creative Arts at the Newcastle University and has an ongoing love of letterpress. Patricia with her talent revels in all forms of printmaking and has experienced extensive residency programs around the world. www.thepandoragroup.blogspot.com.au

Noel McKenna, artist with the Darren Knight Gallery in Sydney www.darrenknightgallery.com/ with his artwork having been described as "the noble poetry of the everyday". His last exhibition was humorously titled The psychiatrist's Dog.

One thing we know is that Noel l o v e s Gill sans font and we had a case full.

As you can see the three of them were to be inspired by literature and they worked to produce their paragraphs or ditties in very creative ways using wooden and metal type. They learnt how to hand set the type, transfer it into the press and mixing colours. With this they made editions of their designs to share or to use in future artworks.
Mixing it all up and pushing the boundaries emotionally and physically I entered the prestigious Portia Geach Painting Prize for women artists this year for the first time and to my surprise I got in, placed on the walls of the S.H.Erwin at Observatory Hill in Sydney with my self portrait. Exhibition finishes December 12th 2014.

Hill End Primary School have set up this educational brilliant idea by the schools headmaster for an art scholarship which includes 10 surrounding schools to have two students selected and invited to be creative at Hill End for two days. Its a grass roots endeavour and what better location than Hill End with it's historic history of artists.

We were invited to do a pinhole photography workshop teaching 30 students and Parris my daughter helped assist, a very simple way and cheap way to make photographs that was achievable for them at home.

We set up our portable darkroom, a hydroponic tent that shifty eyes were upon us when we bought it. Bill fixed it with sink and photography baths and there we created with the students 8 0 p i n h o l e

p h o t o g r a p h s using small tin cans from the $2.00 shop. It was a winner with the students and inspired visiting teachers to create the same setup at their own schools. Students photographed the landscape and then 3 to 4 students at a time would go into the tent and develop their photographs, pure magic.

In between all of the above we had the artist/photographer N I C O L E W E L C H join us for a quickie Tin type wet collodian workshop, we managed to schedule her in between acts. A very talented photographer Nicole investigates the landscape using projections upon the natural environment with historical reference and with this she creates stirring evocative atmospheres in her photography.
