IMPACT

Our road trip to IMPACT Melbourne......international printmaking conference. 27th - 30th September 2011.
The Hill End Press Office is full with showbags full of goodies that we still have to get in and wade our way through. Organic inks and ideas.
The conference for printmaking from around the world at Monash University Art and Design faculty called Intersections & Counterpoints was the 7th meeting for artists, curators, gallerists, writers, theorists, collectors, students and more, It originally started at the University of Western England, Bristol.

The first day kicked off with John Loane master printmaker and artist Mike Parr on there ongoing collaborative partnership. I think for students this would have been a good insight into using alternative equipment rather than the formal etching tools (drills, sanders etc) and thinking up big scale.

One of the most interesting talks for us was with Annis Fitzhugh (GBR) on digital at DCA Print Studio where they make the most of new technologies without abandoning the traditional skills.

The studio house computerized laser equipment for wood cuts that one could program from their home direct to the studio, walk in the next morning and hey its done.

Here the students of DCA made the comment of the experience is the carving and enjoyment that this brings but  there is a definite place for this equipment, the potential is huge.

The best thing about DCA is that they had equipment for all forms of printmaking be it letterpress, digital, laser and traditional etching presses. It was a student and teacher dream environment.
The strong component for the conference was artists books with many guest speakers on the subject and exhibitions of books discussed.

Also panel Gestetner to One Arm Bandit chaired by Alison Alder from Megalo Canberra, discussion with Glenn Buckley, Anna Zagala, Michael Callaghan and Minigraff  on political and street art and where this sits in context with the art world.

It was on the whole a very rounded conference, sometimes the speakers would read from their notes which made it a bit dry at times but the overall feeling was of really opening up the printmaking practice and standing it on its head.

HILL END ARTISTS OPEN STUDIO DAY

WHAT SUCCESS! It was the best best day
The artists of Hill End opened their studio doors on September 18th, the weather shone and the people came, it was Sunday but it wasn't the church we off to. Nevertheless, the church had a hand in it.
The day was a fundraiser for the renovation of the church on the hill to be made into a contemporary artspace in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Heritage and Bathurst Regional Art Gallery.

It was a very special insight into the mystery of creative art making of all the highly individual artists. Its very hard not to want to have a look into this world I know when I travel the opportunity to see an artist that you highly admire, to just dip your toe into their world for a moment is a very magical experience, one deeply breathes it all in hoping to take it away with them.

There was music and an exhibition curated by the Hill End Artists 'From the studio' and Bathurst Regional Art Gallery held an exhibition called The Studio and another exhibition The Great Divide with artists Hill End artists Genevieve Carroll, Janet Haslett and Julie Williams, it couldn't have been a better day, a very rewarding experience for all.

We had our friends Wendy Murray www.wendymurray.com and Doz come to give a hand at Hill End Press with their great enthusiasm and sparkiness.

More on this event can be seen on hillendartscouncil.blogspot.com

All monies collected are going to renovate the old church on the hill where it will become a contemporary art space.......... exciting times for Hill End.

Artist in residence Kurt Sorenson

Kurt Sorenson recently had a 4 week residency in Hill End through the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery residency program.
With Kurt's exquisite landscape photographs they translated well into photogravure where upon he decided to part take in a 3 day photogravure workshop with Bill.
Bill supplied him with 4 x 5 black and white film and using our facilities Kurt managed to turn out some excellent results that were taken further into photogravure.
More of Kurt's evocative art can be seen on www.kurtsorenson.com/

As always the enjoyment is working with other artists and their response to Hill End and making new friendships.
